WHO Declares Hantavirus Outbreak Over, Thanks Spain for ‘Incredible Solidarity’

GENEVA – The World Health Organization declared the hantavirus outbreak linked to the cruise ship MV Hondius over on Thursday. The final contact of a person exposed to the virus completed quarantine, tested negative and returned home, WHO said. “No further cases have been reported since the 25th of May,” Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO’s director-general, told a press briefing in Geneva. “We are therefore very pleased to say that WHO considers the outbreak of hantavirus over.” The total number of cases from the outbreak remains 13, including 12 confirmed cases and one probable case.
