I'm a "Calm-Monger" and your doomsday fantasies are harming real people. A Plea to the Mods

The current path of this community is unsustainable. Over the past few weeks, I've watched this sub transition from being a hub for information sharing into becoming an echo chamber that actively promotes misinformation and irrational panic. Here's what I see, specifically: First off, there is a clear pattern of users actively avoiding being rational. Content that validates catastrophic outcomes is upvoted to the top immediately, regardless of its merit. Conversely, posts or comments providing facts or level headed takes are heavily downvoted and immediately dismissed with terms like "calm-mongering" (which shouldn't even be an insult). Secondly, every few hours, a new post appears from a user in a state of active panic. These are often vulnerable people, already psychologically scarred by the last pandemic, who are being driven to severe distress by doomscrolling the unverified claims and outright lies amplified here. It kills me inside to see these posts, then to click on another post and see exactly why they are panicking. At this point, the panic that's being spread thanks in part to this community is causing more tangible harm to peoples mental health here than the actual virus. People are treating this like the end of the world rather than just looking at this objectively. Mods, please tighten the reigns on the discussion before the speculation and fearmongering completely eclipses the factual reporting that we should be promoting at this time. I have no experience moderating, but here's some ideas about where yall could start: Have strict rules for quality of sources for posts regarding claims of transmissibility, mortality rates, or outbreak severity. Funnel hypotheticals into a dedicated megathread to prevent them from dominating the main feed. Flag or remove unsubstantiated claims that exist solely to incite fear without providing a source. Please, please step in and regulate the quality of information here before this sub loses all its usefulness. This happened to a bunch of subs during COVID, lets not let this happen to this one. It is incredibly depressing to see vulnerable users spiraling into panic in one thread, driven directly by the unsubstantiated "COVID on steroids" speculation dominating the next. We need moderation. submitted by /u/wai_o_ke_kane to r/hantavirus [link] [comments]
